A very special event takes place this weekend (April 17-19) that I wanted to write about and share some news on why it’s noteworthy. Recently, Powershift Group and 3 Day Startup (3DS) have created a new partnership. It's mission is to kickstart new student-run companies and build entrepreneurial capabilities within university communities. 3 Day Startup is a non-profit that helps spread students’ entrepreneurial mindset and experiences around the world. Founded in 2008, they achieve this mission by hosting events and gathering participation from volunteers and organizers who are students and professionals.
It’s exactly how it sounds: they help students start a business in three days. It’s an intense weekend (Friday-Sunday), where participants move through a great amount of progress in order to build companies.
This means that those accepted into the program work with their teammates to accomplish a number of tasks, each building upon the other to:
- brainstorm ideas
- gather a team
- structure a business model
- conduct research
- develop the product or service
- test and learn from feedback
- and more!
At the end of the event, students pitch their companies to the judging panel of very experienced and well-noted entrepreneurs in the community. In addition to the serious learning component of a judging process, there are also various, lighter-hearted, “unserious” opportunities for 3DS to recognize the students in a fun way.
Below is a mini documentary video about the 3 Day Startup process and experience.
This weekend event hosted by 3DS will be the initiation of our support and an effort we hope to pursue together in the future. The Powershift Group and 3 Day Startup mentality is well-aligned. We both believe in highly entrepreneurial environments that waste no time in building meaningful companies that can make a big difference. 3DS is a leader in fostering this experience for the eager, go-getter youth across the globe. Because of this fit, we wanted to collaborate in their expansion.
The Powershift Group team committed to getting involved on multiple levels. Some members of our leadership team are participating during the weekend as mentors and advisors for the students in their company building.
Others are serving as judges and speakers. For example, Powershift Group chairman Steve Papermaster will give a speech at the ceremony and serve as a judge on the business entrepreneurship panel. Principal Steve Guengerich will also judge, but on the social entrepreneurship panel. Finally, our marketing team put its stamp on the event by producing materials and ordering some fun things to really pump up the pitch competition. We've created a "powerbreak" area where participants can grab some "fuel" throughout the event– a necessity to have, especially in the form of coffee to keep things moving at a fast pace!
If you are inclined to see the action in person, there are added benefits. In addition to meeting the Powershift Group team, you’ll meet an amazing panel of other speakers, judges, and volunteers from Austin’s venture community, including:
- Bart Bohn, Founding Mentor of 3DS and Director of ATI Wireless and Information Incubators
- Josh Baer, Executive Director and Founder of Capital Factory
- Zoe Schlag, Founder & Executive Director of UnLtd USA
- Jim Bledsoe, CEO of Solid Green Companies
- Christopher Hastings, Strategist and Founder of Puente Phone
- Chelsea McCullough, Executive Director of Texas for Economic Progress
- Skip Porter, Co-Founder of W.C. Von Goten Laboratories, LCC
